ABOUT US

The Horse Ambulance Trust plays a vital role in equine welfare in New Zealand.

We give horses injured on the racetrack or in training safe transport to specialist diagnostic assessment and treatment at an equine clinic, allowing the best potential for their recovery.

OUR BACKGROUND

The Trust was established in 2016 to fund and procure purpose-built equine ambulances for New Zealand horse racing and equestrian events.

Now, we can celebrate the world’s first dedicated national horse ambulance service, following the commissioning of the country’s ninth horse ambulance in March 2022.

We believe every horse deserves access to the best potential outcome if injured and treated with respect.

OUR PURPOSE

The primary purpose of NZHAT is to fund, procure, operate and maintain a national fleet of horse ambulances that are equipped with support and recovery equipment to assist in the provision of critical care to horses injured while competing at race meetings and equestrian events throughout New Zealand equestrian sport events.

The secondary purpose of NZHAT is to protect the wellbeing of horses competing at race meetings and equestrian events in New Zealand. We do this through industry education, specifically by promoting the animal welfare standards that must be achieved for participants to exceed their obligations under the Animal Welfare Act 1999.

OUR AMBULANCES

Our ambulances, designed and custom-built in Mosgiel, are a world-class asset and showcase the importance of equine welfare.

The purpose-built horse ambulance has a two-point hydraulic system that lowers it to the ground. The horse enters and exits without needing to turn.

A padded crush supports the horse securely during its journey, making it safer and more manageable to transport.

The New Zealand Horse Ambulance Trust is a joint initiative between the New Zealand Equine Veterinary Association, New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing, Harness Racing New Zealand and the Racing Integrity Unit. The Trust is recognised as a charity by the Charities Commission (CC53589).

DONATE TODAY

Any gift we receive will support our mission to nurture the deep connection between the equestrian community and our equine athletes and promote care, compassion, and dignity for New Zealand’s horses.
